PRIVATE TOUR OF THE FLOYD ESTATE Enjoy a personalized tour of the ancestral home of Suffolk County's only Signer of the Declaration of Independence at the William Floyd Estate. The furnished 25-room Old Mastic House contains over 250 years of local history from its first construction in the 1720s through its use by the Floyd Family until 1975.
Over two hundred and fifty years of history are preserved at the William Floyd Estate, which contains architectural features and artifacts from three centuries of American life. Between 1718 and 1976, eight generations of Floyds managed the property and adapted it to their changing needs. The family used the house and property in different ways over the years. In colonial times, the Floyds ran a 4,400 acre plantation; later, as the family's interest turned to business and politics, the lands were used for outdoor recreational pursuits like hunting and fishing. The 25-room "Old Mastic House," the twelve outbuildings, the family cemetery and the 613 acres of forest, fields, marsh and trails all graphically illuminate the layers of history. The most difficult question we face when dealing with the past—the relationship between change and continuity—becomes a little easier to grasp during a tour of the Old Mastic House, a walk through the outbuilding area and a visit to the Floyd Family cemetery.
Part of this special tour will include a behind the scenes look at the Museum collections. Over 15,000 objects and 40,000 pieces of paper are stored in a special building. Guest will treated to an extraordinary tour of the collections. 18th Native American Indentures, early 19th century Christening Gowns, daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, cyanotypes, military uniforms, William Floyd's portable writing desk, beaver skin hats, 17th century Chinese import porcelains, mob hats, Family Bibles and architectural fragments are just a part of this extensive tour of the hidden treasures.
